The contamination that can be in your drinking water can be dangerous to you and your family. The municipal supplies do test for many of these elements, however, some do not test for all of them. If you get your drinking liquid from a well, you are actually on your own. A drinking water test kit is the weapon you have for both situations.

Many of the things that are in your drinking source can be dangerous for you in certain concentrations. These can include lead and mercury. Others are such things as herbicides and pesticides that can come from gardening or farming activity in your area. Nitrates are also something that must be checked for.

Municipal supplies will have systems that will check for most of the contaminants encountered in the area and may place those on your monthly billing for your edification. Some of those elements, listed above, may be in your drinking source and not treated for by the city because they do not have to according to the regulations. This calls on you to be vigilante in the prevent of problems for yourself.

The tests that are available relatively inexpensive. The quality of each kit is what you are paying for. Most of the time each one will indicate the presence of only one element and so a planned system must be designed for the area in which you live.

Each one of these will have either a test strip or a dropper type system for checking the presence you are looking or. The strip will be placed in a representative amount and allowed to set for the indicated time, usually 10 to 20 seconds. The strip is then compared to a colored chart for the reading.

With the dropper system, the water is placed in a dish or bowl. A regent is introduced and allowed to mix and condition the liquid into a color change, or not. That color change result is also compared to a chart. That chart will indicate any contamination that is being checked for and the concentration of that. There are also kits that must send a sample out to a lab. This will take a while to get results, however, it can be the most accurate of all.

The best course of action is to ensure you know what contaminants you are looking for This can be assessed by using the EPA website or your local county extension service. They will be able to indicate what is normal and what problems have been encountered in other areas close to you. A test kit is one of the insurances you have to safe, clean drinking, cooking and bathing.

Whether you get a full check done by a professional in the field or a drinking water test kit of your own, be prepared to do something about the results. The necessary treatments can be less expensive if you get it started right away. Leaving this alone can only hurt you and your family.
