Iron supplements may be necessary for a person who has a low amount of iron in their blood because iron is a very important for several purposes in the body. The main role of iron in the body is to assist in the job of the red blood cells. Hemoglobin is present in the red blood cells, and they need iron to be able to carry oxygen to the rest of the body. It is important to get the proper amount of iron because too much can be toxic but not enough can also cause problems like anemia. Supplements can be taken if a person is not receiving enough iron from their everyday meals.

The best way to ensure that you are getting the right amount of iron is to eat a proper diet with a wide variety of foods. Red meats, poultry, and fish are the optimum sources for heme iron. Nonheme iron is found in various plant sources. Some of the foods that are good sources of nonheme iron are lentils, soybeans, iron-fortified cereals, and oatmeal.

Iron Deficiency Anemia is brought about by a diet that lacks iron-rich foods. Changing up the diet and adding more iron-rich foods or using an iron supplement can reverse this condition. The symptoms of this are usually present as extreme fatigue from the lack of oxygen. There are many people who are more vulnerable to developing anemia over others. These groups of people are pregnant women, premature babies or those with a low birth weight, infants/toddlers, teenage girls, women of childbearing age, and people who have kidney or gastrointestinal problems.

It is not unusual for a pregnant woman to develop anemia. The quantity of blood in the body of a pregnant woman is greatly increased which can lead to anemia. Many prenatal vitamins will contain extra iron to balance this.

Many people get the proper amount of iron from the foods that they eat, but others may need to take a supplement to make up for a deficiency. You need to always discuss taking a supplement with the doctor beforehand because consuming too much can be very dangerous.
